The ATC-XP Friction Device by Black Diamond maintains the silky-smooth feeding of the ATC but ups the braking power. For belaying and rappelling with 7.7-11 mm ropes, it's designed with a smooth, low-friction side and a high-friction side with v-shaped grooves for three times more friction. An extended central web keeps biners and ropes properly oriented and helps reduce kinking.

DECENT FEATURES of the Black Diamond ATC XP Belay Device

  • High friction mode offers 3 times greater hold and stopping power
  • Geometric, fluid design reduces rope kinking
  • Super versatile for all styles of climbing with ropes 7.7 to 11 mm
  • Durable cable holds its shape and resists getting caught between ropes

"It works, but better can be had."  03/14/11

This device does what it's supposed to do. But you can get a cheaper belay device that has more function (auto-blocking). The Mammut Vader Alpine Belay Device is a good example. If you absolutely must stick with Black Diamond, you may as well spend a couple more bucks and get the ATC Guide to get a more versatile device.

"Love it cause I'm a girl!"  12/29/10

I love this belay device since it helps me hold up those big guys. When they are hang-dogin it up on the rock I can just relax. The teeth help keep the rope tight and let me do less work. It's nice color but the picture isn't really accurate based on what I received. Mine is blue and all buffed shiny metal.

"Everyone has one"  12/29/10

The popularity of this is only topped by its predecessor the ATC. Get one and you will not be disappointed. For the extra few bucks the teeth really help if you need to slow down a descent.

"Easy To Use"  12/27/10

This ATC is super easy to use, even for beginners. While it may not be as good as a self braking belay device, it is a cheaper alternative and it can still stop you if you happen to fall. This device is great for teaching people the basics of belaying and/or rappelling.

"Good belaying device unless you need some self-breaking one."  12/17/10

Good for indoor climbing or sport climbing aids. The belaying with this is very smooth. It supports wide rage of ropes so you can easily handle single ropes or half ropes while climbing. If you don't often climb multi-pitch routes or don't experience need in a self breaking mode then you can stick to this good and reliable piece of gear. If not then you can try another version of the ATC - Guide.

"Great product"  12/07/10

I'd say this is the best belay device on the market if you don't want to climb multi pitch. It feeds very smootly (just as smootly as an ATC) yet it locks off well when holding your partner. If they would have made the Guide just like the ATC XP but with autoblock, I'd even like it more than the Reverso. All in all, if you see yourself climbing anything but multipitch, this is the device for you.

"Good belay device"  12/02/10

The atc/xp is def better than the atc but if you do any multi-pitch climbing, spend the extra dough and get the guide version. However, this is great for the singe pitch, gym, or sport climber.

"Outlasts the rest!"  11/20/10

I've had one of these ATC's for a few years now. Absolutely could not be happier with performance. It's been used, abused, dropped, clanked, and banged and it still performs like it's fresh out of the package! Buy one, you will not be dissapointed.

"Held up through much abuse"  10/13/10

Wonderful piece of equipment here. I like the feature of one side smooth and the other with grooves. I tend to use the grooved side for TR belaying and the smooth while working lead. It was also used when my brother repainted the upper story of our cabin and although it does not look brand new, it still performs brand new.

"Very sturdy - perfect for high frequencey use!"  10/07/10

I work at a place that offers indoor climbing and our plain-old Black Diamond ATC started wearing quickly and shreading the sheath of our ropes! We switched to the XPs and haven't had any trouble!

"great belay device - the one to buy"  06/10/10

This was my first belay device and I have been using it for a while now. Love that you can flip it around to have either a stiffer belay (with the teeth) or a more dynamic belay w/ the other side.

"The one to go with"  05/25/10

Universally, I think this is the most tried and tested belay device. You won't hear too many neg's on this equipment. Works universally with most ropes. Affordable and functional. Yeah, GriGri's are rad, but try treading a 10.5mm or greater through one! By the way, the photo is all wrong. What's with that MJ? Mine was red, shinny and laser etched. Very happy :)
