Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it's supposed to do... and does it well. I bought this as my very first belay device when I got into climbing, and I'm glad I did. If you are stoked on climbing and think that there is a chance you could end up climbing multi-pitch someday, just go ahead and buy the atc guide instead of buying a regular atc. It's not that much more in the grand scheme of things, and it will last you a very long time. As far as a comparison with the Petzl Reverso goes, I cannot speak to having used the other product. I have, however, climbed with people using it, and it seems equally solid and a little bit lighter. Give them both a good solid look, and then follow your heart - you can't go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best top belay device available. IF you know what you're doing, you can switch from descending to ascending with this device with only the clip of one carabiner and the addition of a friction hitch. The thing that makes this better than its closest competitor is that it works with larger ropes (10mm+) rather well. Guide mode is easy to set up, but also easy to screw up if your rope isn't loaded correctly or if it's not oriented at the proper connection (hanging from the big ring). ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS pull test your rig before putting someone on belay. If you don't have one, get one. They're versatile, durable, and long-lasting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best multi use ATC device So I've owned a few different devices similar to this. The Reverso 4 by Petzl was ok. I didn't like a lot about it or dislike it a whole lot but it just got the job done. So from a recommendation I decided to suck it up and try the Guide and man I like it way better. I do a lot of two rope rappel and belay where the lock mode is needed. Because of this I rely on a really easy to use device and this fits. With my carabiner set up and rope choice I have never had more ease of use in an ATC. I would for sure recommend this to everyone looking for a multi use belay device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile, durable, and light belay device Got this one for sport climbing for its simplicity and durability. Bring it everywhere, gym and crag because its lightness. Use regular friction side for dynamic belay and fast lowering and high friction side for belaying bigger climber. Hold plastic-covered wire when the metal part gets hot after a long rappel or lowering when you want to take rope out for switching. Useful for top-belay mode and it's automatically lock when the second climber falls.,,,,If you are new to the sport, better to get this one for learning a proper belaying technique before you get your assisted-locking belay device (Gri-gri, Eddy, etc).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Full price...only if you NEED a guide belay device. On sale? Think of the possibilities. I haven't done anything exotic with mine yet, but I really like it so far. Fits rope about the same as the original, and I like that it is designed with the ability to use both sides for varied degrees of friction. The cable is solid and I don't have any fears about losing it off of my harness. The weight-saving holes are a great idea and it still feels at least as sturdy as other devices. I really like figure 8's, but sometimes they just don't give you the stopping power you need. ,,,,http://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en-us/journal/climb/knowledge/howto-video-using-an-atc-guide

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light weight, simple, versatile. My exp. with belay devices:,,I have worked on a high ropes course (ATC,) I have experience w the grigri from gym climbing, and I have been using the prev. version of the ATC guide in my outdoor climbing,,Likes:,,-The design is very simple and straightforward,,-Very lightweight. The guide pretty much lives on my harness on a permanent basis,,-When used correctly, the guide makes transitions at belay anchors extremely efficient,,Advantages over other belay dev.:,,-can be used to rappel 2 strands of rope (unlike grigri),,-designed for bringing up a 2nd climber (unlike grigri , ATC),,Dislikes:,,-It can be quite a workout to pull slack through the device when belaying a 2nd and there is a lot of rope drag

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This guy deserves award after award after award I have used this device for the last 5 years I have been climbing...and it's still as good as when I got it (and a lot more badass looking with all the nicks and scratches). It's light, extremely versatile, and essential for any type of multi-pitch climbing. BD did it right with this guy with the ability to bite harder with the in-designed teeth on the rope for added stopping friction and the clip opening for attaching to a harness. Whenever doing any sort of trad or multipitch with a new climber of the type, I make them purchase this device without hesitation. Perfect

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for when you need something a little more sophisticated than the basic ATC You can't go wrong with this when you want something a little more sophisticated than BD's basic ATC. It's got a "regular friction mode" which feels like the regular ATC and then a "high friction mode" when you flip it around, which gives you more control (e.g. when using a smaller diameter rope). Also has a handy "guide mode" allowing you to belay 1-2 other climbers from above. Truly the do-it-all belay device. Only complaint is the instructions are terrible. Definitely make sure you understand how to use it and don't rely on the instructions.
