"Great device for belaying in guide and normal modes." 		          07/01/09
I finally switched from my old ATC-XP to this when I learned how to belay in guide mode for multipitch or tall climbs. It has worked great so far (though Ive only used it in guide mode a couple times). Some people complain that the release loop is too small to fit a biner, but I just thread some cordalette through it and its works great. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't want or need something complex like a Gri-Gri.

This thing is awesome! It's nice to have a choice of the high & low friction sides. The high-friction definitely lives up to it's name, and it's great to be able to belay from above with the autolocking feature.

"Worth it for the autoblock function." 		          05/02/09
I first started climbing with an ATC, eventually I moved up to an ATC-XP, and recently I upgraded again to the ATC-Guide. I consider BD products to be the top of the line - none other belay devices I have used come close - and if you are going to get a belay device this is the one to get. It is a little bit heavy, but definitely worth the weight for the durability that the Petzl devices lack.

"best belay device out there" 		          02/26/09
best belay device, especially for multi-pitch. Feeds super-smooth on anything from skinny 8mil halfs to fat 10.2 singles. Love the autoblock mode for bringing up a second. A bit beefier then the new reverso 3 but seems to last much longer. overall bomber piece of gear

Well, if you have to upgrade from your belay/rappel device made out of four carabiners, then this is the one to get. Simple design, works like a champ. This this is the stander in belay devices. If you are looking for a belay/rappel device, then buy it! If you already have one, then find some more gear to spend your money on. This thing is cool, but in the end a belay device is a belay device.

"A great product that I would recommend to all climbers." 		          07/09/08
I picked this up after dropping my ATC off the second pitch at Mount Yonah. In the long run, I'm glad it happened. The ATC Guide is superb in nearly every aspect. The high friction side is great for skinny ropes and still feeds smoothly. Belaying the second is also much easier with the autoblock feature. I really enjoy the versatility that I have from this device because of the high friction side. I feel much more comfortable knowing that I can use the HF side for catching a whipper. The only downside is its weight. It is heavier than my old ATC. It isn't necessarily heavy, just more so than what I'm used to. All in all, a great purchase. I would recommend it to anyone getting

can i get a side of awesome with my belay device? high friction makes the dif when someones hang dogging something for an hour. multipitch? i'd use a munter-hitch knot, but heck, this WILL autolock without moving parts on a multipitch...pretty clever really. defn. the best belay device around. no moving parts, simple, high or low friction.

light, works effectively. nice if you need to belay from the top. works like you think it should. high friction/low friction modes are nice for various activities. rappelling is a cinch.

Excellent belay device. Repelling off of it is even better. Really appreciate the side with extra friction. Grab one for yourself and one for your partner. They'll appreciate it.
