Redesigned with an up to 50 gram reduction in weight, the classic Raven Axe by Black Diamond optimizes comfort and ease of use when glacier traveling and mountaineering. Like all of our piolets, the anodized shaft is built from lightweight, aircraft aluminum alloy for high strength. The investment-cast, one-piece stainless steel head is comfortable to wrap your fingers around, and the slim, neutral pick and aggressive teeth are engineered for secure self-arrest. The Raven with Grip is equipped with a Slider Leash and a dual-density, molded grip for when the going gets steep or when you need to chop steps or a bivy platform.

"Great for beginners"  06/21/10

Used a couple weeks ago on Mt Rainier, much much lighter than my old axe. I am 5'10" and 70 cm was a good length, however 65 cm would have been just as good. Adze and pick are easy to get fingers around with bulky gloves on. Great general mountaineering axe!

"Great Axe"  05/11/10

This thing is one bad ass axe. Will chop into ice, not wood, so don't try it. Make sure you buy a leash, it does not come with it, they range from 15 to 20 bucks, so eat topramen for the next couple of days.

"If your shedding weight, this one's for you!!!"  04/18/10

I was surprised at just how lite the Black Diamond Raven Axe really was. It weighs almost nothing, yet feels incredibly strong. I'm 5'10'' and the 65cm was just the right length. Another great product from BD!!!

"Best General Mountaineering Axe for the Price"  04/14/10

This is the axe to own for general mountaineering. I've used it extensively in the Cascades of Oregon and Washington and on a high altitude mountaineering trip in the Peruvian Andes. Fits well in the hand when walking upright. A bit heavier than the Pro version, but this can be helpful if you cut very many steps with it. Durable. Mine has been through a lot, and apart from scratches on the shaft which are purely cosmetic, it's in perfect condition. Most of my friends that I climb with use the same axe and they are all as happy with it as I am.

"Excellent mountaneering axe!"  04/01/10

And more, much more conveniently than Petzl Snowalker or Snowracer axes (in junction of the handle with head)

"Nice axe!"  03/10/10

Does everything a general mountaineering axe should! Ive taken mine up quite a number of peaks and shes shown a bit of wear but who wants a shinny axe anyway! Don't use her as much anymore since Ive gotten into more technical mixed climbing but shes still at my side for any for anything else. All in all great axe wont regret the buy.

"Hefty axe that will last for years to come"  01/20/10

This axe saved my life. Literally. Fortunately Black Diamond had the foresight to make this out of something other than paper because I was able to plunge it deep into packed snow and stopped my 195 pound frame from sliding into a deep abyss. I have used this axe over and over and there is no sign of wear anywhere. For the price, this cannot be beat. Get it or you may die.

"good quality axe"  08/20/09

Bought this for my wife because she has small hands, some of the axes out there on the maket are difficult to grip the head on for long periods of time. The shaft size reduction on this axe worked and the axe is perfect for people with smaller hands.

"excellent mountaineering tool"  07/02/09

strong lightweight and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. what more could you ask for ? You may want to get some sort of leash for it but its not a must have. serves dual purpose as a bottle opener as well !!

"Super light, super tough...trust it with your life"  04/26/08

This ice axe is amazing. Its light so you can take it anywhere, but super stong so you can trust it with you life. I have had to self-arrest a couple times with it and it has never let me down. One note is that you need to buy some sort of leash for the axe.

"I love it!"  04/08/08

I have used the Raven Axe a few times in Mt Baldy near LA and on Cactus to Clouds Skyline trail in Palm Springs. It is a very nice pierce of thing to have with you on icy and snowy slopes. Can't do without it! Works very nice as described by Black Diamond. I liked it better than the Raven Pro.
