"Strap Problem Makes The Whole Thing Useless" 08/30/10
I bought this in 2008, so maybe the newer version has fixed this problem. What I found is that there was no good way to keep the strap adjusted on this helmet. Whenever I had it jsut right, it would slowly work its way loose by the end of the day. What I was left with was a helmet that would fall all over the place and probably not protect anything in a real fall. I suppose it would still be good at stopping rockfall. BD claimed to be unaware of any problem when I asked them about it. I ended up just taping the strap adjustment with climbing tape to keep it fit to my noggin.
"Best all around helmet" 06/09/10
Light, perfect fit, holds a headlamp, takes stickers, fits well with a hat, and low profile. This sucker has taken some hits and holds up fine. I can barely tell it's on most of the time.Belaying or leading, this helmet is great. Not too bulky and adjustments are quick.
"pretty good helmet" 01/11/10
It feels pretty solid and safe, and it holds onto my headlamp quite well, but it's a bit on the sweaty side. A more traditional helmet, with more room between the dome and your head might be better if that is the sort of thing that bothers you.
"This is a great climbing helmet for any number of climbing situations." 12/08/09
Having a solid helmet like this is mandatory when rappelling. It is comfortable to wear and has a no nonsense design with functionality closely followed by beauty. The headlamp strap works great and holds my lamp perfectly. Great helmet. The only drawback I've found is the chin strap. So I have a big head. Maybe like a horse. The straps on this at full extension, would not connect without some serious discomfort. For larger heads, you may want to try it on before ordering. In the end I contacted BD and had them send me a bit of strap and new buckles so I could extend it and they did, no questions asked. They didn't even ask me why the long face.
"You want something that'll take a hit and hold long enough to get you home" 11/21/09
Light-weight foam moulded helmets have become the style. Most (Petzl Meteor, BD Tracer) will handle a small rockfall and/or big bash - great for crags. But say you're working a new Rupal Face project on Nanga and take a hit - you want something that won't just disintegrate. This fella is a good option. Modest price, can take a couple hits and still hold together long enough to get you home. Note though to destroy and replace the thing when you're back safe from the epic.Consider that darker colours attract lots of sun on the glaciers. If it gets a lot of sun, replace every 5 years as per manufacturers' instructions.
"Save your noggin" 10/19/09
I recently took a bad climbing fall and had to be evac'ed to the hospital. Both I and others on the scene believe that if I had not been wearing a helmet, the consequences would have been fatal. I will be replacing that grey Half Dome with another Half Dome. The new one will be in orange, as I have noticed that color has the added ability to attract hummingbirds.
"Sweet Deal" 10/15/09
Definitely one of the cheaper models out on the market, but still looks and feels great. Protects your head great, and is easily adjustable to fit most head sizes. The only thing about this helmet I don't like, is that it collects a lot of sweat, so I would recommend wearing a bandanna before using this helmet on a climb. Sweet deal.
