Asolo Agent GV, superb under most conditionsHave you ever taken a domestic or foreign climbing trip for several days or more and wanted to wear just ONE pair of shoes (besides your stickies or heavy winter boots) that would accommodate all needs? They should to be fairly light, probably low tops (if you’re in shape) yet sturdily built. Also, suppose you need something to withstand a grim hike over sketchy, harsh terrain, mud and/or water? How about a lengthy approach (days) carrying 50-60 pounds of gear with good traction and support? And suppose you’ll need shoes for more than just climbing purposes, possibly exploring a novel (foreign?) city or engaging in some social activity where, unfortunately, you can’t wear your comfy climbing rags, but need some otherwise acceptable clothes, even possibly semiformal attire. It does happen. The single pair of shoes you wear would have to fit this entire range of situations. Sound possible? Not really, but it is.
In fact there is a shoe that ‘fills this bill’. The old BD ‘Huckleberries’ were close, but not available any more. Now comes the Asolo Agent GV. Sized to fit well right out of the box, they are built with several exceptionally well thought out details, including a very adequate one piece, goretex lined leather upper (1.8 mm thick) providing a comfortable fit with a surprisingly form-fitting heel pocket. While declared a ‘light hiking shoe and winter walking’, they are MUCH more than that. Or I should say they can be made to be more than that if one chooses to simply substitute a heavier duty insole, like the heat molded Softec Ultra footbed for the original flimsy, non-functional insole (why do they do this?). Yes, this does increase the overall cost, but I’ve had 4 pairs of these shoes now, worn them in a mind bending variety of conditions including a fast push up to Everest Base Camp and a transit across New Guinea, and have NOT been disappointed once. The extra cost is your reward! Now you have a long lasting, incredibly durable, protective shoe that will fulfill all of the above conditions, probably more. If they get wet, they will dry fast. If they get muddy, a quick cleaning will return them to a nearly pristine state.
What’s more, they look good with all types of clothing from tattered baggies up to and including semiformal wear if necessary. No, they are not for cold weather and deep winter conditions to be sure, although I have worn them on frozen snow, ice and mud using microspikes in temps hovering between 15 and 30 and they hold up beautifully.
Do yourself a favor and check these gems out BEFORE buying a ‘comparable or cheapo’ …. or before Asolo quits making them, which is common throughout the industry for some unknown, arcane reason. You will not regret it.
