I didn't believe paying so much for a brand but if my money conscious friends would pay for it then I have to give it a try. I ended up buying this one because it's totally my style and plus the lifetime warranty, no brainer! I walked around in the rain with this with confident and made me wanted to walk in the rain just because of this jacket. I have had it for awhile now and it feels great, looks great, and others responded great when I have it on. Totally in love with it.
I originally bought the Beta AR, in size small, it was definitely a nice jacket, but being i am 5'5" weighing in at 150 lbs. The sleeves were about 3" too long. I also wanted a shell that was "thigh" length. I ordered this jacket in Mens X-small, and with wear it with a Delta LT underneath and it keeps me warm enough for most occasions, when it gets really cold is when i add an extra layer on. The only drawback, is i still wish it was made a little longer to keep my bums warm. FYI, this jacket is made is no longer made in Canada.
I really, really, really wanted to like this jacket, but like my 11th grade date to the prom, it was simply not meant to be.... It is very narrowly cut, and was not going to work when worn over an insulation layer. I am a 5'10, 210 lbs, 44" chest, 34" waist, and there was just too much me in the chest and shoulders and not enough jacket when worn over a down jacket of moderate loft. Sadly, it went back to MJ...I thought about getting this in XL, but the increased length in the sleeves would not have worked. So, it's onto another coat. I must say, MJ has been very accomodating about the situation; have made several suggestions about other items to consider.
"Great balance between the jacket you want to carry and the one you want to use"
I got my Theta SL Jacket at the tail end of a wet winter and really liked its compactness and light weight but until recently had not needed to wear it much. In a recent trip to Yosemite I finally got a chance see how good it was in the rain. I was very impressed, the Gore Tex Paclite is light but still very water and wind proof. The slightly heavier Gore-Tex used in key areas makes the jacket feel very substantial while keeping the overall weigh down. The pockets are a good size but I would avoid stuffing them too full and the hood is well designed with draw cords that can be adjusted while wearing gloves. The only thing I would change is that I would make it a few inches longer.
This jacket will keep you dry no matter what, it is amazing. I have honestly never owned a jacket that I would call completely waterproof until I bought this jacket. Also, it breathes very well and works great in combo with my Arcteryx Hyllus Jacket.
I swapped a Beta SL jacket for this Theta SL because the Theta medium is cut a little more generously in the sleeves and shoulders. It is a great everyday rain jacket, and being lightweight and waterproof, it is perfect to have in the pack for backpacking and climbing. Waterproof zippers and vented underarms are great for regulating temperature. The hood is oversized to fit a helmet, but it is the one negative. It can be cinched down, but this gives you the option of poor visibility or a hood that doesn't stay in place.
I've been hunting around for a nice rain/ski/hiking/semi-casual jacket and this is it! The fit is amazing. I am very tall and slender and this feels perfect. Most jackets are for guys in beer belly contests and have a ton of material around the mid section. Because this fits so well, it is easier to move around and does not feel like it is in the way. The look is great and I get many compliments. Quality is top notch. The only thing is that I wish there was an inside pocket, but it was designed for minimum weight so I can compromise. Very good product and highly recommended.
This is my second Arc'Teryx jacket, it is very light. It's nice that the hoods tucks away as I find Arc'Teryx jackets have hoods that are way too big (this one is a bit smaller than most of their jackets).
