If, for some reason, society collapses and we enter a state of pure chaos, I will instantly run into our warehouse and grab an Arc'teryx Men's Beta AR Jacket (and then a couple of our heftiest ice axes). I would want the no-nonsense protection with bombproof durability. The GORE-TEX® Pro Shell will block wind, rain, snow and whatever else falls from the sky in our broken world. It is light and packable with an athletic fit that will accommodate layers for the coldest winters (of our discontent). The hand pockets (pack compatible) and pit-zips allow for ample ventilation so I could stay on the move even with drastically changing temperatures and conditions. This situation is purely hypothetical and will probably/hopefully never happen, but if the Beta AR is up for that challenge, it can certainly handle the challenges of our current world.

"Great jacket. Attention to detail and craftsmanship is second to none"
I own several pieces from arcteryx from shorts, t shirts pants and jackets. Every piece is very well crafted and this jacket does not fall short of my expectations. I ordered a small as I am 5'6 145. The shoulders and body of the jacket fit me well for my build. Be aware this jacket is fitted therefore it's not meant for every body type. Sleeves are a bit long but sleeves come with Velcro strap to tighten Gore fabric is stiff and you won't sneak up on anyone. For future use will use to snowboard and though the jacket is fitted there is enough room to layer underneath with a compression and a few layers.
Purchased this shell in Nighthawk at the end of December to replace an aging Northface. This is going to be my go to shell for Ski Season and Backpacking. Overall the shell is super light with an athletic fit, I ordered a XL and I am 6'3 and 210lbs. I also purchased the Cerium LT Hoody to wear under and the combo fits perfect. The first day I put to shell to the test was on a rainy ski day in NH. The conditions were poor but the shell worked it's wonders and kept my upper body super dry. After the day was done, I noticed that there was a small (2cm) tear right under the logo, not sure how. The next day called up Arcteryx to see what they could do. The customer service rep was unfriendly and give me the option of returning the coat to have it repaneled for $40 but they don't have Nighthawk in stock. So I can either patch it or have another colored panel on the left front side. I purchased this coat for their reputation and customer service, after this I would not recommend Arcteryx.
Over the years, I have learned that it is better to just buy the right gear, even if it costs a little more. Personally, i found this jacket on craigslist and was able to get it a little cheaper, but it really is an out standing jacket. The Windstopper fabric does exactly what the name entails, and this jacket is like a little refuge on windy peaks. I have sat comfortably in 50mph gusts as long as I have my face turned away from the wind. The fabric is fairly thick, and it is lined with fleece, so the jacket is a bit heavy. It is a simple jacket with only three pockets. One small one on the inside which can hold beta and not much else, and the two large hand pockets, which are placed nicely to be accessible with a backpack on. Tho hood easily accomodates a helmet, and it is long enough to be able to wear a harness over it without the jacket coming out. Combined with a pair of bibs, and an underlayer, I feel nearly invincible in this jacket. I like this jacket more than the Alpha line.
"Best Pro Shell on the market, and its not even close"
I've owned a lot of GoreTex shells over the years and used them bass fishing, backpacking, general camping, snow and water skiing, frequent downpour on my way to the office - you get the idea. This jacket not only fits well but is 100% waterproof, windproof, just a comfy comfy jacket. If I had one small complaint it would be the hood is too big if you're not wearing a ballcap or helmet. Otherwise this jacket is my go to for all conditions! Pricey but its probably the last shell you'll ever have to buy assuming you don't gain 50lbs and have to get a bigger size.
