I'm doing 16 days between Ireland and Scotland, spanning coastlines, mountains/munros, glens, and islands come April of 2014, so I really wanted a solid pair of boots that were waterproof and offered solid ankle support (especially given that my graceful self tore my ankle jumping up a stair last year...yeah, a stair). These boots met and exceeded my expectations. Awesome support for the entire foot and ankle and very little break in required. I took them out for a 7 mile hike through a trip-hazard heavy - lots of exposed tree roots and large rocks - area in Virginia. I'd say within 2-3 miles, they had already earned their money and then-some.
I was really surprised by the high quality of this boot; they are beautifully made! Ahnu's website even claims that this made-in-China boot is also Fair Trade. That was the deciding factor for me. I recently ordered these because I want to continue being active in Portland's rainy winters and didn't want some big clunky hiking shoe (especially if I wanted to walk around Mt. Tabor's muddy trails and then wanted to duck into a cozy coffee shop afterwards). The shoe fits great, however the ankle part seems a little stiff to me and on short walks, I noticed more rubbing at the back of my ankle than I was expecting at this price point. Hopefully this part will break in and feel better with thicker socks. Or maybe my feet are just weird. P.S. If you are looking to maintain waterproofing on smooth leather, get some mink oil, make sure boot is clean and dry, and rub the oil into all seams/edges. Should be good to go!)
I. Love. These. Boots! Love 'em. Mine are dusty and they have seen many miles on the trials in the past year. I have hiked everywhere in them, from the wet, muddy trails of Western WA to the dry scorching trails of Southern and Western UT without incident. We're talking eight miles of very difficult hikes, daily, for weeks. My feet have always stayed dry and comfortable. The inside leather lining at the top of the boot is phenomenal for comfort and I wish Ahnu continued throughout their line. I am prone to back of the heel blisters with every boot and I have never had one in these boots. I definitely "feel" the terrain under my feet in these boots. In other words, the shank, while supportive and providing lots of traction, is thinner/more flexible than some boots in a higher price point. That said, I have found them to be more than adequate for a variety of terrain. If you do a lot of scrambling over rocks you might want a firmer shank.Great boots for the price!
"Amazing performance, but it doesn't last"
From day one I absolutely LOVED this boot. It's lightweight, sleek, attractive, waterproof and sturdy! It's comfort is unbeatable and never did I ever blister or even get hot spots! Unfortunately, after less than a year of use and even with frequent upkeep and re-waterproofing, my boots seem to have lost their waterproofness and are breaking apart. SO, if you only plan on using these boots periodically or on particularly gentle trails, this boot is perfect! But, if you tend to go off the beaten path and want a boot that can last you a while, this might not be the best fit.
