In 1995, Jake Burton founded the nonprofit Chill in Burlington, Vermont to bring snowboarding to kids who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity. Now in 14 cities in the U.S. and Canada, Burton is still Chill's largest supporter, donating volunteers, funding, office space, and equipment so that 2200 inner city kids can escape the pavement this winter and head to the slopes.

About Chill:
Chill with Burton Snowboards will serve over 2200 disadvantaged boys and girls in 14 North American cities this winter. Chill with Burton is an intervention program for disadvantaged inner-city kids, ages 10 to 18. Chill and Burton teach at-risk kids to snowboard over six weeks each winter, giving them everything they need for the experience: lift tickets, instruction, bus transportation and head-to-toe gear.

Chill and Burton Jackets serves youth who are challenged by a multitude of issues: youth in group homes and foster care; with addictions; from the juvenile justice system; from alternative schools and community centers; those struggling with drugs, violence, excessive anger, or depression. Many of the kids have never left their cities, even their neighborhoods, and most have never been to the mountains. Chill and Burton Snowboard gives all of these kids the chance to shed their labels of addict, delinquent, troublemaker, or underachiever, and, through their own personal success, become a snowboarder.

Kids want to learn to snowboard on a Burton Snowboard because it is fun, but it takes several lessons and lots of hard work to learn. We use the vehicle of snowboarding to help kids accomplish goals they never thought they could while teaching them some of the most important lessons of life: patience, persistence, respect, courage, responsibility, and pride-all through positive adult role models who treat the kids with respect and encouragement.
