Reliable and easy to set up. Get familiar with the field maintenance before you set off. I like the new design for the legs - it makes it a lot sturdier than my friend's old whisperlite.
I have used this stove on many backpacking expeditions and it has never disappointed me. It is easy to use and it heats up water for making food. It is stable and does exactly what it should, heat stuff up.
"When you must have to cook in the outdoors, leave the clunky stoves behind and get this compact one!"

For a while, i was contempt carrying my huge and clunky Coleman stove. However, i was severely limited as it was heavy and nowhere near being compact. Enter the MSR Whisperlite International and I have the ability to cook and heat water all in a small compact package! Regain your cooking prowess, be it scrambled eggs to hot water for cup of noodles, in the great outdoors!
This stove has always been my go to stove. It is powerful enough to cook for a group and reasonably light if you split up the fuel and stove among the group. After 5 years this stove has been to hell and back, and lived! If the jet gets clogged, a quick shake is all that is needed to clear it. The only thing this stove does not do very well is simmer. If you're looking for a durable stove with lots of muscle, you cant go wrong here.
This stove heats fast! It's can be a bit disconcerting getting it started if it decides to be finicky (due to the noise) but it WILL start and that is the key. The primary way to save weight with this stove is to have a couple different sized bottles and only bring the fuel you need. Also, work the fuel line so it becomes more flexible, otherwise your bottle can overpower the stove, potentially tipping it over.
Easy to use, primes easily even in moderate winds. Very utilitarian an ease to fix and work on, but be careful the plastic fuel pump is not indestructible
This is a great stove, and dependable. MSR has made this stove forever, and it is still dependable and works great. Occasionally these stoves get clogged up, so be sure to read the instruction manual, and practice taking it apart and putting it back together. I recommend getting the MSR titanium spoon that works as a tool to go with it.
Overall a great stove. Heats quickly, boils fast, and can be used with your choice of cookware. This stove is a bit more difficult to use than some models and types, and involves some setup to use, but it is a time-tested design and can be repaired and cleaned in the field. I've had mine for two years, and over time the included heat sheilds wear out a lot (just thin aluminum that folds up for travel), but better shields are available to buy. This is where MSR is pricey--the repair kit and higher end heat shields, as well as fuel bottles are all sold separatley. This is my biggest criticism is having to buy the extras.
